Nuala McKeever Uncovered
Nuala
McKeever rose to fame in the 90's with the Hole in the Wall Gang, famous for their jokes about the
troubles, sketches about the troubles and humour about the troubles. Growing up in republican
west Belfast, she hit the big time in Give My Head Peace, playing a character growing up in
republican west Belfast. However, after a while fame went to her head and she got too big for
her boots. She packed her bags and climbed through the hole in the wall and off to a solo "career".
Due to UTV's charter requirement to fill the schedule with a quota of self produced programming, she
landed her own show on the channel. After much market research and brain storming with the UTV
exec's, they decided against naming the programme, Awful Shite, and plumped instead for
McKeever. Her most famous character of course is the Belfast hussy, cigarette in hand,
shouting down the street for her son with her infectious catchphrase, "Have any of yous 'uns seen
my comedy?"
The high point for the program came in 2001 when it wrestled the TV Quick Award for Television Show
Most Likely to Induce Death by Self Strangulation, away from its perennial winner School Around the
Corner. However, since then things have been downhill for Nuala. She was beaten for the
key role in the Electoral Register adverts by her Give My Head Peace replacement and now arch nemesis
Dymphna, whose versatility in acting so many characters was unbelievable. Unbelievably bad.
Nuala can now be seen doing the tills in the Mace on Bedford Street, where she is ritually humiliated
by her former mates and big stars from the Beeb, who come in during their numerous and frequent breaks
to buy rolling tobacco and the Guardian.
